Land Based Activities: 


ABL/ Team Challenges: Available in all regions

ABL stands for Activity Based Learning and consists of several fun small games, challenges, and activities that are often used for team bonding or developing leadership skills. These Challenges will get participants thinking and problem solving, communicating with peers, trusting their peers, and cooperating with their peers. 

Outcomes are; 

  • Learning life skills like communication and problem solving 

  • Relating to others and working collaboratively to solve problems or achieve a common goal  

  • Building resilience by working through hard challenges or learning how to deal with defeat/ losing  

  • Unlocking potential by giving participants the opportunity to lead and/ or contribute in group settings 

  • Self-management and participation  

  • Having fun  


Abseiling Available in Auckland only

In this activity, participants will have the opportunity to face their fears and extend their comfort zones by lowering themselves off the abseiling platform. It is a wonderful opportunity to break a large obstacle down into small achievable goals and to support others. 

Objectives are: 

  • Self-management and building resilience by overcoming mental obstacles and extending your comfort zone 

  • Learning life skills like goal setting and achieving those goals 

  • Relating to and providing support to others 

  • Having fun  


Archery

In this activity, Students will learn how to safely handle and use a bow and arrow. They will need to work on mastering fine motor skills and concentrate to hit the bull’s eye. Taking part in archery also gives participants a sense of responsibility as they are being trusted with the use of something dangerous. 

Outcomes; 

  • Self-management of reactions, behaviour and following safety instructions and boundaries  

  • By not hitting the bull’s eye or the target, participants are building resilience trying to overcome frustration and try again 

  • Unlocking potential by giving the opportunity to be trusted with something dangerous  

  • Relating to others through support/ encouragement and providing tips  

  • Having fun  


Bottle Rockets Available in all regions

In this activity, participants will get the opportunity to design, build and launch a bottle rocket. They will learn about the importance of experimenting through trial and error and having fun in the process. Our bottle rockets use water and compressed air and give participants lots of variables to explore and create the best rocket they can. 

Objectives are: 

  • Participating, contributing and working collaboratively in peers to experiment, build and launch bottle rockets 

  • Learning life skills like not giving up, thinking and problem solving to achieve a desired outcome for your rockets flight 

  • Self-management through following safety instructions and boundaries 

  • Having fun  

Available in all regions

Burma Trail Available in all regions

In this activity participants will learn to put their trust in their others as they carefully navigate each other through an obstacle course blindfolded while holding onto a rope. Strengthening communication skills through instructions and comments throughout the activity. 

Objectives are: 

  • Working collaboratively to navigate hazards 

  • Learning life skills of clear communication and identifying hazards 

  • strengthening relationships and trust 

  • self-management in unusual situations/ during the loss of the primary sense of sight 

  • Having fun  


Bush craft  Available in all regions

In this activity, the group will be split into smaller teams to work on different projects, that would be linked together to complete a scenario. When time allows, groups can switch projects to have a go at different projects. Projects include; basic outdoor first aid, stretcher building and carrying and bivy building. 

Objectives are: 

  • Working collaboratively through discussions and in small teams to execute a goal that benefits everyone 

  • Building resilience through trial and error 

  • Learning life skills like basic first aid and knot tying 

  • Having fun  


Catapults Available in Auckland

In this activity, students will get the chance to work as a team, problem solving and following instructions to construct 1 or 2 working trebuchet Catapults (group size and/ or time dependant). Once constructed students will learn how to safely operate the catapult and use it to launch different objects as far as they can.  

Outcomes are; 

  • Problem solving  

  • Learning life skills through following instructions, symbols and texts 

  • Working collaboratively to create and safely operate catapults  

  • Self-management through following safety rules and boundaries  

  • Having fun  


Flintstone Carts Available in all regions

In this activity participants will work together to construct a form of transportation, using outdoor resources such as bamboo, ropes, and old water drums. During the construction process they will learn and use new knots and rope skills that can be used in other areas of life like securing items on a trailer or roof racks. Once built, the participants get to enjoy rolling around on a cart that looks like it came straight out of the stone age or the flintstones tv series.  

Objectives are: 

  • Working collaboratively to accomplish a common goal 

  • Learning life skills of how to tie knots and hitches that are transferrable to other activities and areas of life 

  • Relating to others and their needs to help them participate to their fullest potential 

  • Self-management through following safety instructions 

  • Having fun  


Orienteering Available in all regions

In this activity, participants learn about maps and how to use them. They will get the chance to navigate their way around the area to locate hidden markers. Working in pairs or small groups, participants get the chance to talk, plan and practice map skills 

Objectives are: 

  • Working collaboratively to find the hidden markers and not get lost 

  • Learning life skills of how to use a map. Google maps is great but 2D paper maps are still very well used in our day to day lives to get us around (Eg. School maps, shopping malls, parks and reserves and walking tracks, the Zoo and amusement parks just to name a few) 

  • Building resilience through having to search and back them selves that they are in the right place 

  • Using language, symbols and text to decipher map features and decode what they find 

  • Management of time and self 

  • Having fun 


Rock Climbing Available in Auckland

In this activity, participants will work in groups to belay and look after their peers as they challenge themselves to climb the artificial rock wall. This activity is great for teaching and encouraging challenge by choice where participants are encouraged to extend their comfort zones but at their own pace 

Objectives are; 

  • Working collaboratively to keep their climber safe 

  • Relating to and encouraging others 

  • Building resilience by extending or stepping out of their comfort zone 

  • Participating (even when going up is not your thing, help is always needed with belaying, route finding and encouragement) 

  • Having fun  


Slacklining Available in all regions​​​​​​​

Slacklining is tightrope walking made fun. In this activity, participants will explore and experience the fun, challenging and growing recreational activity of slacklining. Participants get to work on their balance individually and collaboratively while attempting fun and engaging challenges on the slackline. 

Objectives are: 

  • Building resilience by falling off, getting up and trying again 

  • Working collaboratively to assist each other to complete the challenges and give others a sense of success 

  • Participating in something new 

  • Having fun  


Tee Pee Building Available in all regions

In this activity, Students will get the chance to learn and practice some knots, hitches and lashing skills while working together to create teepees and tripod style structures 

During this process they will be exposed to all the problem solving those early traditional cultures had, to create movable shelters. Once created (time depending of course) the students can share camping stories, test their creations weather proofness or even create 1 giant Teepee using all the resources available.  

Outcomes are; 

  • Building relationships with others through the sharing of stories 

  • Communication and problem solving 

  • Working collaboratively to create a Tee Pee 

  • learning transferable basic rope skills 

  • Having fun
