A Spotlight on Mal
In honour of International Women’s Day, we’re celebrating one of the incredible women here at Youthtown, Mal!
She plays a key role in shaping the lives of young people, inspiring the next generation, and championing positive change. From her beginnings as a part-time team member to her current leadership role in Christchurch, Mal’s journey is a testament to her dedication and passion.
Over the past five and a half years, Mal has grown within Youthtown, progressing from a part-time team member to Programme Lead, then Senior Programme Lead, and now a Team Leader. Her leadership and ability to connect with young people have made a lasting impact.
What inspired you to work in this field?
Before Youthtown, I worked as a mountain bike instructor, and we often had youth groups come through. I loved the banter and building rapport with them. That experience made me realize how much I enjoyed working with young people and forming meaningful connections.
My mum was a counsellor, so I was exposed to youth work early on. Seeing her impact inspired me to pursue a path where I could support and empower young people too.
How do you see your role making a difference in young people’s lives?
I always want to show young people what’s possible, to empower them to try new things and step outside their comfort zones. Giving them agency in programmes and involving them in programme development is key to engaging them and making a real difference.
"Mal brings an amazing balance of fun and energy, completely transforming the vibe of a room. But at the same time, she’s always challenging people, asking questions, making them think differently, and pushing them to see beyond their own scope." - Steph (Christchurch Team Leader)
What are your hopes for the future of your industry?
"I hope to see more young women and greater diversity in general, stepping into leadership roles. It’s important to create opportunities and provide the development needed so they know they can make an impact in these spaces."
What achievement are you most proud of?
One of my proudest achievements is launching DBC (Disabilities Basketball Community Programme). This a super inclusive programme that provides a safe space for young people with disabilities. I was inspired by a similar programme I was part of in Nelson when I was 10-13 years old, and I knew I wanted to create something just as meaningful."
"Seeing it come to life and even getting media coverage was pretty epic! I’d love to keep evolving the programme and integrating these young people into our Youth Hubs.
"Mal leads through action, constantly challenging young people and showing them there’s more beyond what they’ve experienced. She adapts programmes to meet their needs and pushes them to explore new possibilities." – Steph (Christchurch Team Leader)
More Than Meets the Eye!
Mal’s adventurous spirit doesn’t stop at work! She’s achieved some amazing personal feats, including:
"You can’t put Mal in a box—she truly gives everything a go." – Steph (Christchurch Team Leader)
At Youthtown, we are incredibly proud to have Mal as part of our team. Her leadership, passion, and commitment to inclusivity continue to shape the future for young people. On International Women’s Day, we celebrate Mal and all the inspiring women making a difference in our communities.
