Holly Beynon is gearing up for a major leadership role this December, stepping in as Technical Director of Basketball at the 2025 National Summer Games. With more than 1,200 athletes arriving from across the country, the Games mark a rare and exciting moment for Christchurch - the first time in 20 years this national event has been hosted in the city, and the very first to be held in a brand-new sporting facility.
For Holly, the opportunity came when Special Olympics New Zealand approached her directly. After hearing what the role involved, she didn’t hesitate. “A sports event like this, with so many athletes and at a brand-new venue - that’s huge. It felt like something really special to be part of,” she says.
Across the four days of competition, Holly will be responsible for ensuring the entire basketball tournament runs smoothly. She’ll be working closely with coaches, managers, referees and families to make sure everyone feels supported, informed and able to simply enjoy the moment. While she is sharing the role with colleagues from Pioneer Basketball and Secondary School Sport Canterbury, Holly will be very much on the front line - helping athletes navigate the experience, responding to any challenges, and ensuring the courts are a positive, safe and fun environment. Holly will also be the MC for the basketball Awards ceremony.
Although basketball isn’t her primary sport, supporting players with intellectual disabilities has become something she deeply values. “They’re always having fun. They don’t take it too seriously. They just love being there, making friends, smiling, and learning. You walk in, and they know exactly who you are.”
Holly sees clear links between this volunteer role and her Youthtown mahi. The experience will strengthen her skills working with diverse groups of young people, support her growth in event delivery, and help her bring new ideas back to Youthtown programmes. “It opens up possibilities for us - new activities and new ways to support this community alongside our current disability basketball programme.”
Dylan Perfect-Tait (GM Programme Delivery & Community, Youthtown) says Holly’s involvement reflects the organisation’s values in action. “We’re proud to support Holly in taking on this role. Her commitment, her heart for young people and her willingness to step up for her community embody what Youthtown is all about. This is the kind of leadership that creates lasting impact.”
Fran Scholey (Chief Executive, Special Olympics New Zealand) also welcomed Holly’s appointment. “Volunteers like Holly are the backbone of our Games,” she continued, “Her energy, professionalism and care for our athletes ensure every competitor is supported to shine. We’re thrilled to have her on the team.”
As Holly looks ahead, it’s the atmosphere she’s most excited for. “With more than 200 basketball athletes, the vibe is going to be epic. There’ll be a bit of magic.”
