Youthtown’s Break from the Quake camps launched in style this week with 100 young Cantabrians setting sail across the Auckland harbour aboard the majestic Spirit of New Zealand.

Once under the harbour bridge, 181 colourful spring flowers were released into the ocean by the children to commemorate the lives lost in the February 22 quake, and also to celebrate new beginnings and the start of a fun-filled two weeks at camp.

The event included a prayer from the boat’s captain and a wreath laying ceremony which held significant meaning for the kids who have been so closely affected by the devastation in their home city.

It was a perfect sunny, afternoon for the sailing and a very special time for the children and Youthtown team who have worked long and hard to bring the Break from the Quake idea to fruition.
