Urban Unity Upper Hutt members scoop big awards!

Youthtown shone at the fifth annual Upper Hutt Young Achiever Awards last night. Urban Unity Upper Hutt squad members Lauren Thorpe, Iris Lyons, Kimberly Godwin, Teina Hitaua and Leigh Bathgate were all nominated for awards. The judging panel, made up of local community figureheads, selected winners for each of the following categories:

  • Culture
  • Service
  • Leadership
  • Environment
  • Recreation/ Events

Leigh Bathgate took out the Service Award.  As well as being a valuable and active member of the Urban Unity Squad, Leigh supports Upper Hutt Brownies and Girl Guides as a Ranger, is an ATC Cadet and finds time to play summer league soccer, cricket and badminton (amongst a whole range of other cool things).

Teina Hitaua won the Recreation/ Events Award. To describe Teina as “busy” is a complete understatement. As an active founding member of Upper Hutt’s Urban Unity Squad, Teina also finds time to lead Upper Hutt College’s Kapahaka group (who came third at the 2009 Hutt Valley/ Wairarapa Regional Competition). He’s an assistant senior tutor as well as a member in the Young Maori Leadership Group.

Congrats Leigh and Teina on your success and well done to everyone else nominated – you’ve done us proud!
