Youth Week Winning photo Youthtown Christchurch

Youth Week, led in New Zealand by Ara Taohi, is about championing young people and youth development, supporting their dreams and celebrating the contribution towards this in our communities.

Our four values (Independence, Mastery, Generosity and Belonging) are integrated into everything we do, and during Youth Week (21-29 May), we focussed on these values with our programme participants of all ages.

The primary school aged Youthtown Participants at Linwood Ave, Christchurch joined up to demonstrate ‘belonging’ with this photo (top of page). The photo illustrates how they look out for each other and have fun as a group after school each day and in the holidays.

Harry Latter, an Intermiedate school student from our Youthtown Taupo programme, thought this certificate (below) should be awarded whenever participants displayed Youthtown’s values.

Secondary school students at Youthtown sites across NZ thought about what inspires young people to be the best they can be. Here are some of the comments made by teenagers at Youthtown’s Avondale Programme on what has helped their personal development:
Zyan (aged 15): Youthtown’s activities, staff and trips have helped improve my confidence.
Jonah (aged 14): Being treated fairly and being trusted with responsibilities.
Solomone (aged 14): Learning new social skills
Floyd (aged 15): Being given help with making new friends and building confidence.
Rachel (aged 15): Being given chances to show talent.
Jacob (aged17): Being given opportunities to communicate.
